About The Tote
In 1985, Johnson Oil Company opened its first convenience store in Luling, Texas. The chain, known as Tiger Tote Food Stores, has grown to twenty-plus stores located throughout eleven counties in Texas. Diversification helped fuel this growth as the company expanded into other aspects of the convenience store business. In addition to its own proprietary delis, many Tiger Tote locations also offer branded fast food selections.
Tiger Tote “cleaned up” in 1996 when they opened their first laser car wash in Gonzales replacing the old brush style with a state of the art touchless car wash system. Four locations now offer laser washes in addition to a couple of do-it-yourself bayed facilities.
In 1997, Tiger Tote became a Subway franchisee and acquired two faltering businesses in New Braunfels. Under new ownership, the once struggling Subways began to break sales records and have continued to do so. Additional Subways have been established since that time bringing the company total to nine with five of those being stand-alone locations.
As of January 1, 1998, the convenience store chain split away from Johnson Oil Company and became a separate corporation, Tiger Tote Food Stores, Inc. Both companies are headquartered in Gonzales.
A new name and an additional brand were implemented in 2000 as Tiger Tote Food Stores opened its first Chevron branded location. This new convenience store was named “The Tote” and was soon followed by several more "The Tote" locations.
The company presently employs more than 400 people.
